Recently, Professor Liu Yanping of Nankai University Business School and Associate Professor Abraham Zhang of the University of Essex Business School in the UK jointly undertook an international cooperation project successfully concluded. The project was funded by The British Academy, the name is Barriers to effective compulsory waste sorting for a circular economy in China (Research on the influencing factors of improving the efficiency of compulsory waste sorting in China based on circular economy), the approval number is SRG21\211282, and the project study began in September 2021.

Based on the development background of sustainable and circular economy, major cities in China have vigorously promoted garbage classification in recent years, which has attracted extensive attention from the academic and practical circles. As a developing country, garbage classification in China's megacities has also become a hot topic of global concern. The results show that the main reason for the success of garbage classification is the establishment and improvement of the overall responsibility system, which includes three aspects: vertical responsibility system, horizontal responsibility system and public responsibility system. At the same time, the further effective promotion of domestic waste classification work is also faced with many constraints, among which, the most important constraints are insufficient understanding of the difficulty and complexity of garbage classification work, inadequate planning and preparation, ineffective cross-departmental cooperation, lack of grass-roots supporting policies and unclear responsibilities.

The research results have been written into two academic papers and submitted to the international authoritative journals British Journal of Management (AJG/ABS four-star) and Journal of Environmental Management (AJG/ABS three-star). In addition, the relevant results have been submitted to the relevant government departments in Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin in the form of policy recommendations, and will be presented at relevant international academic conferences.
